Chapter Twelve

Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any worse, my sponsor decided to pay me an unexpected visit. “Hello, Hagna. So nice of you to stop by.” Why, why, wwhhhyyy?

“I wish I believed you were happy to see me. Can I please come in?”

“Come in?” I turned to Puck. It’s Hagna, I mouthed. She’s probably looking for my probation officer.

Am I in trouble? he mouthed.

Yes.

Puck’s cheeks turned an alarming shade of green.

“What are you doing here, Hagna?” I asked. “You never stop by.” I grabbed Puck’s hand and dragged him back to the kitchen while he hyperventilated. “I wish I would have known. I would have cleaned up.”

“Please open the gate, Abigail.”

“I will.” Puck and I hurried over to St. James, and we each grabbed an end. I had him by the feet, and Puck had him by the arms. We pulled in opposite directions. Oh, for heaven’s sake!

Follow me, I mouthed.

Puck nodded, and we dragged my sleeping parole officer down the hallway.

“Abigail,” Hagna said. I had the phone between my shoulder and ear. “This is serious. Let me in, or I’ll have to fly over.”

“Okay. Hold on one second.” I put St. James down and used the app to open the gate. “See you soon.” I shoved Stewart’s phone back into my pocket, grabbed St. James’ arms, and continued to drag him to the library.

“What happens if Hagna finds out about your parole officer?” Puck asked.

“Nothing good.” I propped St. James up on the couch. Gosh, he was heavier than he looked. All that working out did not work in my favor. I shoved a pillow under his head and pulled a blanket up to his chin. “You need to find a place to hide,” I told Puck.

“Where should I go?” He followed me out of the room.

I locked the door. “There are like two hundred rooms and closets in this place. Find one and stay there. Hagna called me earlier looking for St. James. I think that’s why she is here. If she finds him passed out, there will be a whole lot of questions that neither of us wants to answer right now.”

Like, why is your boss dead?

“How about I come clean,” Puck said. “It’s going to happen eventually. I can explain what happened. They have to be more reasonable than the police were in this situation since they know magic is real.”

“That’s a horrible decision. Trust me. We must tie up loose ends before we involve the authorities.” I opened the powder room door and shoved Puck inside. “Stay here.”

The doorbell rang, and I cringed.

Grande barked and galloped down the upstairs hallway. I ran to the foyer and caught him by the collar. “Hold on, boy,” I said and scratched him behind the ear. “Hold on. Take a breath.” I was mostly talking to myself. Hagna knew me better than most. She would suspect something was wrong if I appeared too agreeable or too frazzled or too anything but my normal brusque self.

Fake it, witch.
